Current research falls within three themes, which cut across taxonomic boundaries: macroevolution, conservation biology, and phylogeny estimation.

Macroevolution

  • Why are species distributed so unevenly among lineages?
  • How do characters evolve?
  • Do generalists and specialists have the same macroevolutionary dynamics?

Conservation biology

  • What determines extinction risk?
  • How does taxonomic practice affect conservation?

Phylogeny estimation

  • Most of the above research requires estimates of phylogeny as a substrate. We have helped to develop the construction of large 'supertrees' - comprehensive composite estimates of phylogeny produced by combining algorithmically information from many source estimates.
